Ford recalls 35,000 Mach-E Mustangs due to major issue with EV battery system

Well, it was bound to happen. While the last couple of years have seen the electric revolution sweep over the country faster than the phrase, “Check out my podcast,” it was bound to have a setback or two along the way. One of the more recent setbacks comes by way of a recall issued from Ford regarding its Mustang Mach-E.

More than half of all 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-Es are being recalled

The recall pertains to 2021-2022 Mach-E models, which could potentially affect 34,762 units in total.  The issue stems from a concern that vehicles equipped with an extended-range battery, through the combination of direct current fast charging and repeated wide-open throttle incidents, could see their high voltage main connectors overheat. As per the Ford recall, “An overheated contactor that is prevented from properly closing while driving can result in a loss of motive power, which can increase the risk of a crash.”

Ford will repair the Mach-E’s faulty battery contactor for free

Thankfully, Ford says that it will forward all potentially affected Mach-E models to either a Ford or Lincoln dealership and replace the contactor free of charge. The Blue Oval also made note that any owner who paid out of pocket to repair the overheating battery part prior to the recall was given a general reimbursement in May of 2023. All other owners who have not addressed the issue as of yet can expect to be contacted by Ford between October 30th and November 10th.

Thankfully, the problem does not seem to be catastrophic, provided it is taken care of promptly. This does, however, make us realize that, as with all new technology, there are bound to be a few hiccups now and then, and further illustrates why it may be better to lease than purchase cars like the Mach-E. And while we would love to see another recall from Ford to change the Mach-E’s name to anything other than “Mustang,” hopefully, this battery issue will be the last we see on the NHTSA’s website for a while.

Mercedes has announced how much its Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV, and its "Night Series" edition, is going to cost. As expected, it’s not cheap. The luxury electric utility vehicle will start at just under $180,000 -- but that’s what you’ll pay before taxes and fees for a stripped-down basic version of the EQS 680. If you want the “Maybach Night Series Design Package” (and if you have an eye for luxury, you probably do), it’s going to set you back an extra $25,000. Add on a couple of grand for the “destination fee” and a state-dependent tax bill, and you’re looking at north of a quarter of a million if you want to experience the best of Maybach’s first all-electric vehicle.

In terms of performance, the EV offers a pair of synchronous electric motors with a 484 kW output equating to 649 horsepower and a 0-60 time of just 4.1 seconds.

Pre-orders for the Cybertruck opened up back in 2019, and people who slapped down their $100 deposit have had a bit of a rough ride since then. The truck's divisive appearance, and a mishap at the unveiling that resulted in a couple of "bulletproof" windows being easily shattered, didn't temper Tesla supporters' enthusiasm. Some 200,000 people pre-ordered the wedge-shaped EV shortly after it was announced, and according to some reports, that number has increased tenfold since then. This may be an issue for people who haven't nabbed an early pre-order but want to own the long-awaited steel-clad pickup.

The long-awaited EV has been delayed multiple times, and when deliveries do eventually start, it’s going to be more of a trickle than a deluge. According to Musk himself, production will eventually hit 250,000 units per year. But Tesla’s plant won’t hit that capacity until 2025 at the earliest.

Earlier this year, Kia unveiled the all-electric Kia EV9. It’s a three-row midsize electric SUV with level 3 autonomous tech and up to 379 hp produced by dual motors. The Kia EV9 also comes with a 99.8 kWh battery that is estimated to deliver a range of up to 300 miles — that’s if you purchase the all-wheel drive or the rear-wheel drive long-range option. On the other hand, the standard model is available with a smaller 76.1 kWh battery, which can cover up to 223 miles of range.

Another cool thing about the 2024 Kia EV9 is that it looks like the Kia Telluride, except that it’s slightly longer and the bumper design is different. Because it’s a Kia EV with no engine, it offers more interior space than the Kia Telluride. Better yet, the all-wheel drive Kia EV9 is faster and more powerful than the Telluride X-Line with a V6 engine. However, the Kia EV9 has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, which is 500 pounds less than the Kia Telluride.
